Bahrain’s Akhbar Al Khaleej newspaper reappeared today after a one-day ban imposed by the authorities. “Official authorities have issued directives lifting the ban,” Bahrain News Agency said. The newspaper was earlier suspended for reasons related to the Press law, a report said. Akhbar Al Khaleej, first published in 1976, is the oldest newspaper in the country. A publishing ban on Bahrain’s oldest newspaper was overturned on Monday, after it had been shut down after it published an article claiming that Iran’s hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may be Jewish.

The United Arab Emirates’ new proposed media law, recently approved by the Federal National Council (FNC), is causing a stir among press freedom groups and journalist circles. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has appealed to the UAE’s Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, urging him to reject the law, which the group warns would harm press freedom in the UAE.
The United States Postal Service has to be the most creative postal service in the world. It has revealed a range of new stamps honouring The Simpsons. The stamps will be released across the United States on May 7, 2009. Wow! I really can’t stop at being amazed at daily changes in rules and laws (official and governmental) in this part of the world. Of course I am talking about UAE in general and Dubai in particular. It was just a few months ago that the starting fare for taking a taxi from Sharjah to Dubai was increased to AED20 with by the Road and Transport Authority (RTA).
