Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have announced a $500 million donation to fight tobacco use in developing countries, according to a CNBC report.
Gates is also expected to announce his contribution of $125 million over the next five years toward the project, which will address tobacco-related problems in such countries as China, India and Africa.
This is so typical of Americans. Read the above news item carefully and you will know what I am trying to point out to. If you aren’t able to figure out, let me point it out to you – “will address tobacco-related problems in such countries as China, India and Africa.”
Why do Americans think that problems exist only in other countries? Why do Americans think that it is their birth-right to meddle in each and every situation – be it political or otherwise of other countries? Why can’t the Americans get this fact straight – “America is the most problematic country in the world!”?
Gates and Bloomberg want to fight tobacco problem in other countries such as China, India and Africa. If you look at the statistics of “Total Adult Smokers by Country”, you will find out that China and India – both world superpowers – don’t even figure in the top 20 list. While China figures on the 30th spot, India, well is the 98th!!
And look at this. This study on annual cigarette consumption per person states that US is on the 10th spot with 2670 cigarettes per person. China meanwhile is on the 19th spot with 1900 cigarettes per person and India – well, it’s not even on the list!!
AOL Health quotes another study by The Economist, which states that US is on the 41st spot as far as cigarette consumption is concerned. China is on the 27th spot. India meanwhile is on the 119th spot!
Conclusion: US needs to clean its own backyard first – a country with all the drug addiction and the other vices – before it “donates” money to other countries. US needs to get one point into its head – other countries can handle their problems without your help. So buzz off!
